Question 1

Where do the seized cars put up for auction come from?

Accepted Answer

Passenger [vehicles](/en/subastas-publicas-vehiculos) auctioned publicly originate from seizures of individuals or companies for unpaid debts. These debts can be automotive finance loans, bank foreclosures through the courts, or unpaid taxes owed to the [Tax Agency](/en/subastas-hacienda-aeat) and [Social Security](/en/subastas-seguridad-social). This section focuses exclusively on passenger vehicles (hatchbacks, saloons, estates and SUVs).

Question 2

How much can I save by buying a car at a public auction?

Accepted Answer

Acquiring a seized car can yield discounts of 30–50% compared to second-hand dealers or the traditional used-car market. To ensure the purchase is profitable, calculate your maximum bid by subtracting Transfer Tax (ITP), any outstanding road tax and the cost of a mechanical inspection, as the vehicle is delivered without warranty.

Question 3

Can I see, test or start the car before bidding?

Accepted Answer

As a general rule, no. Seized passenger vehicles are usually held in sealed municipal or judicial storage facilities and are auctioned under "as-is" conditions (in their current physical and mechanical state). Although the auction notice sometimes allows an exterior visual inspection, you will not be able to start the engine or test-drive the vehicle before placing your bid.
